A conversation with the Chief of the Department of Infectious Diseases (Lucca)

Many are wondering what are the most common infectious diseases, the most dangerous, which in recent years have aroused increasing alarm. But more than anything else now everyone is wondering what is the scale of infectious diseases, including AIDS. In this age of globalization, where the mass migration have experienced increased mobility, is also easy to wonder whether the encounter between the immigrants from backward countries, where people still live in very poor conditions, and the citizens of developed countries has resulted in return of old diseases such as tuberculosis in the west. To get an answer regarding numbers in our province and town we visited the Chief of the Infectious Diseases department at the "Campo di marte" hospital, Sauro Luchi. During the interview he revealed interesting information, which confirmed some assumptions and denied other. Dr. Luchi, what are the most common infectious diseases in our area? "Certainly, Hepatitis A, B, C and HIV. At our clinic pathological cases of chronic viral hepatitis have been over 1800 and 30% of patients went to encounter complications that have led to cirrhosis and liver cancer. In the last year we have also registered an increase of 30 new HIV cases, for a total of 400 patients. Of these 30 we have 11 reported cases of AIDS. The data show that the spread of the virus is not decreasing in our area. What is most worrying is that more and more people have contracted the disease several years before and discovered to be affected at a later stage. It 'good to clarify that if the diagnosis is made early, you can create therapies that can control the infection, avoiding the evolution of HIV to AIDS: in practice, where the disease is recognized early, HIV does not kill, the important thing is to be tested whenever any doubt arises ". Whatabout diseases from far away countries that came back in vogue, such as tuberculosis? With regard to tuberculosis, however, we have about 20 cases a year, one third of them are immigrants, who were infected here due to poor living conditions, while the remaining two thirds are Italian . But I must say that,  TB is a treatable disease: we have old and new drugs. "
